Media Review: Fars News Agency and the Fabricated Tragedy of Chain Poisonings from the Perspective of Children
May 5, 2023
As audiences, we receive news and information from various sources. Our sources of information include:
– Social networks
– National and prominent media outlets
– Local media
– Citizen journalists
– News websites
– News magazines and blogs
– Research reports and news analysis
The credibility of information sources is not equal, so we don’t expect them to be on the same level. We have different expectations from national and prominent international media outlets compared to local media or citizen journalists. We share information from credible media sources without hesitation, fact-check news from citizen journalists and less credible media, and always have doubts about the accuracy of news and information from some news sources that should never be republished.
“Fars” is one of the news agencies that should always be approached with skepticism regarding its news and information because it does not adhere to the most important principle of journalism, which is “avoiding bias.” Fars News Agency is not only a biased media outlet but deliberately tries to execute the agenda of security apparatus by disseminating disinformation and misleading the audience. Pay attention to this report published by Fars News Agency on 11 Esfand 1401 (March 2, 2023), titled “Details of the Incident Involving a Woman on the outskirts of Tehran Girls’ School.”
In this report, Fars News Agency, without mentioning any informational sources, without providing any documents or evidence, and even without making the slightest effort to make their claim believable, states:
“According to the social group of Fars News Agency, a few seconds of a video of a confrontation with a woman on the outskirts of Tehran Girls’ School was released yesterday. It was said that this woman was the mother of one of the students of this school who had come to the school out of concern for her daughter’s situation. However, the objection arising from a mother’s concern for her child’s well-being was responded to with detention, and moreover, in a violent manner. But supplementary investigations and identification indicate that this 54-year-old woman does not have any children in the 13 Aban Tehran Girls’ School, and during her presence in front of the school for several hours, she repeatedly encouraged students and passersby to chant subversive slogans. However, the inappropriate manner of dealing with this woman has caused objections and follow-ups by officials, and the Minister of Interior and the Judicial Organization of the Armed Forces have given orders to deal with the guilty person. However, the headlines and videos published about this incident, such as ‘Confrontation with the Poisoned Mother of a Student at the 13 Aban School,’ are not true.”
When news lacks a source, the publishing media has no credibility. The publishing media is not impartial; it always follows a safety line in its reports, indicating specific objectives, meaning that the content is fake. And because it is clear that this media intentionally promotes fake news to mislead the public, this report is a clear example of disinformation.
In addition to being fake, this report can be examined from several other angles:
The published report is not produced by the correspondent of this news agency; rather, it is a report that has likely been provided to this news agency by security institutions. This report was placed on the Fars News Agency’s Telegram channel at 14:49 without a journalist’s name or a news source. And exactly at 14:49, it was tweeted with the same content by Abdullah Ganji, the former editor-in-chief of “Javan” newspaper and the current editor of “Hamshahri” newspaper, who is one of the government’s security-media figures.
Ganji wrote: “Fortunately, the individuals who assaulted the lady in Tehranpars were identified and arrested, and that is right. However, this woman does not have any children at the Tehranpars Girls’ School, and during her presence in front of the school for several hours, she repeatedly encouraged students and passersby to chant subversive slogans. This can be investigated.”
This news was immediately published by other government media outlets, quoting the Fars News Agency, indicating that there is a deliberate effort to mislead public opinion and the use of their own media tribunes.
The content published by the Fars News Agency and the media figures of the security apparatus behind this news line indicates that they are not familiar with either the Convention on the Rights of the Child or even the Law on the Protection of Children and Adolescents. They do not believe in the rule of law because, according to Article 17 of this law, anyone who is aware of the commission of a crime against a child or adolescent and fails to report it or take action to address it is considered a criminal. Article 17 of the Law on the Protection of Children and Adolescents states:
“Anyone who is aware of the occurrence or imminent and serious threat against a child or adolescent or witnesses such an occurrence and refrains from reporting it to competent authorities or seeking their assistance, or, in the absence of access to these authorities or their intervention being ineffective in preventing the violation or mitigating its consequences, refrains from taking immediate and proportionate action to prevent the occurrence of the threat or aggravation of its consequences, shall be sentenced to one of the punishments stipulated in the sixth degree of the Islamic Penal Code.”
Therefore, to gather and protest against the poisoning of female students, which is a serious threat to the bodies and souls of adolescents, it is not necessary to specifically have a daughter. Anyone who remains silent in the face of this danger and does not attempt to address the threat that affects adolescents is considered a criminal according to the laws of the Islamic Republic.
Knowing the source of content production allows us to know to what extent we should doubt it. Having doubts about the accuracy of news and information received from government media, including the Fars News Agency, is a condition for protecting ourselves and others against the harmful productions of this media and other government media outlets. They use various tactics of propaganda and disinformation to deceive the audience. Media literacy and possessing critical thinking are the means to counter such media.
